Seemandhra on boil as fasting Jagan's condition weakens

YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy (40), who has been on an indefinite hunger strike against Andhra Pradesh's bifurcation, has refused to heed his party's request to call off the strike. He did not allow doctors to inject IV fluids, nearly a day after he was forcibly shifted to a hospital.

Jagan, whose popularity in Seemandhra region has soared considerably after his party began spearheading protests against the Congress for proposing to carve out a new Telangana state, started fasting six days ago in jail, where he is lodged for alleged corruption.

The fast intensified protests for United Andhra in Seemandhra region as students took out rallies in Eluru and Kakinada.

In many parts of the state, people courted arrest. Hundreds launched an indefinite fast in support of their leader, with YSR Congress activists offering prayers at temples, mosques and churches.

Doctors said his blood sugar level was going down. Jagan's creatinine levels were on the higher side and ketone levels had increased, raising fears of damage to vital organs.

An adamant Jagan has vowed to continue his fight to oppose the bifurcation.

"I am not worried about my health and I am confident I can go like this for two or three days. This fast is for the people and the state. Please do not inject fluids while I am conscious. After I collapse, you can do your duty," Jagan was quoted as telling a doctor.

Sources in Osmania Hospital confirmed that if the condition of Jagan deteriorates, he would have to be administered life saving fluids.

Alarmed doctors said they were worried and were unsure how to go about handling such a high-profile patient, who is refusing to cooperate.

Late in the evening Osmania superintendent K Ramdas said Jagan needs better care and should be shifted to another hospital, besides OGH being a common man's hospital, his stay in the hospital spelled problems for other patients.

During the day, worried YSR Congress party members passed a resolution to request Jagan to call off the fast in view of his deteriorating condition.

His mother, YS Vijayamma, broke down on hearing that Jagan has refused to break his fast.

Police threw a tight security ring around the hospital and did not even allow Jagan's wife, Bharati, to meet him, saying they had to take legal recourse to be allowed by his bedside.

"I request all party activists to maintain calm and not to resort to any untoward activity," said Vijayamma.

Bharati waited outside hospital for almost an hour and pleaded with the police to allow her to see her husband. But when she learnt that a court's permission was required to allow her inside, Bharati left the place in tears.

During the day, Bharati also moved a petition before a CBI court with a request to allow her and Vijayamma see him in hospital. A decision on this petition is likely to be announced on Saturday.

In Vizianagaram district, cable operators stopped airing programmes to protest the split of the state. In Bapatla, Union minister for state Panabaka Laxmi's house was stoned.
